The University of Leeds MAP chapter was founded in 2014 by five postgraduate students in the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science (PRHS). We are an active and friendly bunch, united in our interest of tackling the under-representation of minority groups within philosophy! The chapter is run by postgraduates, but everyone is welcome to all our events. We encourage undergraduates to come along, and are very grateful for the support we receive from faculty members.
Our aim is to raise awareness and tackle the issue of under-representation in philosophy in a variety of ways. We run and support a variety of events (more details below), as well as providing a fund for those wishing to attend conferences that focus on MAP related themes. We are very grateful for the School of PRHS for sponsoring this fund.
The chapter hosts regular reading groups that aim to facilitate discussion in a wide range of areas that include (but are not limited to) theory regarding minority participation, writings on the minority experience in academia and philosophical works by those of minority backgrounds currently omitted from department curricula. In 2014-15 we focused on the topic of implicit bias. In 2015-16 we focused on the philosophy of disability. We have continued this focus in the first semester of 2016-17. See here for our next reading group.
In addition, we have hosted a range of diverse workshops which have included an implicit bias training session; a panel session with Nicole Hall and Heather Logue on the broad topic of gender; a working lunch with Paul Taylor on his book Black is Beautiful; a film screening of Land of Silence and Darkness; plus many more! Take a look at our schedule for details of upcoming events, or check out our Google events calendar.
We are continuously looking for new ways to encourage diversity in philosophy, and are excited to announce that we have begun working with local schools. Read more about this project here.
We hosted our first conference in October 2015 on the theme of Implicit Bias. We were delighted to welcome Jenny Saul and Katharine Jenkins, Jules Holroyd, and Ian Kidd as keynote speakers over the two days. Everyone enjoyed the broad range of speakers from across the globe, as well as the famous treasure hunt across Leeds! We are excited to be hosting our second conference – Philosophical Perspectives on Disability – in May 2017. More details here and here.
And finally, we sometimes just like to get together over a pint (or alternative beverage – we’re not exclusive!) and chat about how things are going. Keep an eye out on our Facebook and Twitter for upcoming socials.
We hope to see you soon!
